One of my favorite museums in Los Angeles is located smack dab in the middle of Hollywood, next door to Mel’s Diner at Hollywood and Highland. It isn’t hidden, but oddly enough it seems few locals know of it.
The museum is the old Max Factor building. There are some displays on the history of Max Factor make-up and it’s role in Hollywood including a film with a lot of information. Having done a lot of make-up design for or theatrical productions in college, I found this quite interesting.
I love the 100 years of Hollywood exhibit. There are 10,000 pieces of authentic Hollywood memorabilia in this permanent collection. I like the I Love Lucy memorabilia the most…and the cars upstair are pretty cool too…and the old camera equipment…and the basement.
Actually my favorite is the basement!!! They have a chamber of horrors area that includes the set from “Silence of the Lambs” of Hannibal Lecter’s cell. It’s really awesome and spooky.
